Edmtrain: Thanks, Pablo, for doing an interview for Edmtrain. Wanted to know a little bit more about you – how you started, and I know that you changed to a big room techno sound, so what made you want to move to this sort of sound?
Maddix: So in 2019, I realized I was doing big room before, and my preferences changed a bit. I was going to more techno parties myself. So I realized the music I was making, I still enjoyed it but I wouldn't buy a ticket for it myself, so I started to go in the studio without any expectations from fans and just make whatever I enjoyed the most. That's how I made my first track in the new genre, like it's called 'Ecstasy'. And from there on I actually started just building and pushing the sound forward, like every track has a new element or just continues to evolve. And I'm super happy to see like also my old fans are still there with me and transitioned most of them to enjoy the new sound, so I'm super happy to see that.
Edmtrain: How does it feel to be back here in Miami for music week? I know it's not your first time here.
Maddix: Yeah, I was here in 2018 back then just as a visitor and I enjoyed it a lot. I'm super happy to be back here right now. The weather is amazing, the people are amazing. And I'm super excited for STORY tonight and then Ultra on Friday, and on Saturday we're going to go to Ultra as well, just to see it all, to enjoy it.
Edmtrain: I know that you're playing the second to last slot for Ultra and the UMF Radio Stage hosted by Revealed. This is a really good slot, so is that when you're going to do your biggest set?
Maddix: I think so, yeah, one of the biggest sets. I've prepared a lot of new music as well, some unreleased stuff, I think about six or seven unreleased songs. Because I think in Miami it's kind of a showcase thing as well. All the artists drop their new music. I'm just really excited and happy that Revealed gave me this spot so I can really just play as hard as I want.

Edmtrain: Also I know that Hardwell is one of the artists that you highly respect. Can you tell me a little bit about how you differentiate your sound from his? I know that he's come back and he's also sort of big room techno.
Maddix: I think my sound is a little bit darker and a little bit more catered towards techno as well. Like some of my songs, you probably know Beatport, right? The music-selling website. They don't really know where to put my music. It's funny to see because sometimes they put it at main stage, which is like the whole big room thing. Then they put it at techno and now I have a No. 2 on the hard techno charts. But that's kind of where I want to be, right in the middle of everything. So techno DJs can support it, big room DJs can still support it. And I think that's slightly different than what Hardwell is doing. But I'm super happy like it's perfect because I can play his music, he can play my music and we support each other a lot in the sets.
Edmtrain: I know you're launching a new label so tell me a little bit more about it. I mean it seems similar to the name of your first major track but how did you come up with this name?
Maddix: Well the name is going to be EXTATIC and it's going to launch really soon and it's always been a dream to be able to release my own music with my own vision, which Revealed also did. But now I can also give other producers a chance to release their music on my label. And the name it's derived from 'Ecstasy' and then you get ecstatic. And I think the music, the sound that I make fits perfectly for this name.
Edmtrain: Agreed, yeah. I listen to a lot of your music, including 'Revolution'. I think it's really catchy, especially with the beat.
Maddix: Yeah, and it's like influences from old school trance, techno and now hard techno all blended together. And yeah, it just needs to make you ecstatic. So that's why the name.
Edmtrain: Tell me more about this Maddix Rumble plugin that you're developing.  How did you come up with it and how do you hope that artists are going to use it?
Maddix: It was quite funny. We had a meeting with Revealed and randomly in between a meeting, one of the guys told me like, yeah, we want to start making some plugins. Do you have any idea? We can work on a plugin together under the Maddix name. And five minutes later, it just popped in my head like, OK. Let's make a kick rumble plugin. It's called Maddix Rumble and for me, one of the key points was that it shouldn't exist already because then people can use the different ones. So this is a pretty unique plugin that will help people who want to make the big room techno sound or just techno producers to work on their kick drums and to make them fit in the techno genres.

Edmtrain: I know that David Guetta and MORTEN created this new sound called Future Rave, right? So they tried to create this movement of a new sound. Do you want to create a big room techno movement or I mean how big do you want this to get and  how many artists to be involved?
Maddix: The biggest sound in the world. But no, when we started we were thinking about the name and when Hardwell came back, I saw a lot of fans calling it big room techno, so we kind of embraced it because it perfectly describes what it is. It still has influences from like the big room music, the main stage music, and basically it's like techno for the main stages, a bit more commercialized maybe. So big room techno is a perfect fit. And I see a lot of producers have started to embrace this kind of sound, this music, and so many people are making music like this, so I hope, I think it will be really, really big, like the future of dance music.
Edmtrain: Dance music is always changing, you know, the popular genres are always sort of evolving. Do you think that we're moving sort of, I think in the past few years you've preserved in the undergrounds with house and techno, do you think that we're moving somewhat back into the big room sound overall, or main stage?
Maddix: Possibly like everything comes back, but I think like right now it's going darker and deeper, and then in the future, who knows, maybe in 10 years, 20 years, everything will just circle back. Like I get inspired a lot by music from 20 years ago, dance music from 20 years ago, so yeah, maybe that will happen again in the future. For me it's just always pushing sounds forward and an evolution and I try to keep, to stay ahead. Like always be the guy changing it instead of like following the other artists. So that's one of my goals now.
Edmtrain: Do you have some exciting collaborations coming up and who would you like to collaborate with?
Maddix: I have a lot of collaborations coming up. Actually Hardwell is going to premiere one on Saturday, a new one. Never been played before, so I'm super excited to be able to see it live, and then the other ones... I have a new remix for Armin van Buuren, he asked me, and he's also going to play it at Ultra. And there's basically a lot of collaborations coming up, but everything is still a work in progress and I'm not sure when they're going to be released or whatever, so I can't say too much. A lot of big stars in the works.
Edmtrain: What are your favorite things about Miami when you're not playing on the stage, then what do you like to do here or eat here?
Maddix: The beach, we just went to the beach, it's amazing, I've missed it. In the Netherlands it's still cold right now. And good food, vibes, it looks like GTA: Vice City, you know, crazy vibes. But actually I still have to explore a lot because it's only my second time visiting and last time was quite busy as well, so yeah. I remember the, what's the name, Wynwood area? Yes, five years ago I was there, amazing with the graffiti on the walls.
